This project is assisting the Algerian Ministry of Water to implement of a programme designed to modernise and improve the management of water resources sector. The main objectives of the programme are to:

• Contribute to the sustainable satisfaction of consumer demand for water
• Restore the reputation for water quality in the sector
• Improve the performance of all stakeholders within the framework of an integrated water management strategy
• Facilitate savings in the use of water and the protection of the environment

The project is expected to achieve the following results:

• Updating and consolidation of the National Water Plan against the background of reform of the Algerian Administration
• Strengthening of legal, regulatory and judicial frameworks and the reinforcement of communication and information networks
• Delivery of dynamic tools required to give a quantitative and qualitative knowledge of the sector and the means to ensure that decisions are defined and implemented effectively

The project will support the following actions:

• The organisation and reform of public administration
• Integrated management of water resources (including flood control and storm drainage systems, water quality, removal of impurities, irrigation, waste water management)
• The regulation of the water sector
• The maintenance of sector infrastructure and hydraulic equipment (drinking water network, dams, treatment plants)
• The management of the sector’s human resources
• The management of the pipeline network
• The design and implementation of geographic information systems to provide dynamic model management of major water systems, reserves and dams, the implementation of localised flood alert systems and the creation of local maps of drinkable water networks and treatment plants)
• Training strategies and plans, design of and delivery of training
• Internal and external communications
