The under-development of Non-State Actors (NSA), particularly Civil Society, and the lack of capacity of the existing organisations are seen as major barriers to sustainable development and democratisation in Ethiopia. NSAs have a potentially crucial role in communicating the needs and interests of their constituencies to government, thus guaranteeing more democratic decision-making. The aim of this programme is to promote a stable and democratic political environment by integrating all sections of society into the mainstream of political, economic and social life.

WYG International is currently providing Technical Assistance in order to increase and improve NSA dialogue with their constituencies, with the Ethiopian Government, other stakeholders and amongst themselves, and also to increase NSA's capacity actively to participate in the national development process. This is being achieved through the following:

  • Increasing the capacity of Ethiopian NSAs to engage in development and democratisation processes;
  • Strengthening the independence and self-sufficiency of NSAs;
  • Improving coordination and networking amongst NSAs;
  • More effective delivery of services in the governance area;
  • Enhancing the capacity of Ethiopian NSAs to have dialogue with Government and stakeholders and to participate in the definition and implementation of sustainable development policies in all sectors.

The €10 million fund is being used to finance NSA projects which are being selected through calls for proposals according to 9th EDF rules and regulations.
