WYG International is contributing to long-term food security and poverty alleviation in Tajikistan by promoting key institutional reforms in the agricultural sector aimed at strengthening the agro-economic environment and increasing competitiveness.

The project will strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and assist it to develop, implement, evaluate and regularly update a sound agricultural policy in line with the priorities laid down in the National Development Strategy (National Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper) and in coordination with the other agencies concerned. The work will also develop policy instruments for use by the relevant units of the Ministry of Agriculture in order to ensure that the development of agriculture is planned and conducted within the framework of a well managed policy framework.

As official remuneration levels in the public sector are extremely low, a primary task will be to ensure that the envisaged Policy and Strategy Unit in the Ministry is staffed with well selected, motivated and competent specialists working effectively in close cooperation with the rest of the Ministry, with provisions to call in specialist resources as required.
