Access to Education for Disadvantaged Groups

WYG International worked with the Ministry of Education and Research to design and implement activities directly related to creating greater access to education for disadvantaged communities through:
  • Support of school inspectorates in developing strategies for improving access to education;
  • Developing and delivering training programmes for:
  • inspectors to develop their capacity to support and monitor improvement of access to education;
  • Teachers already teaching in schools from communities with a significant number of disadvantaged pupils;
  • Members of communities to become teachers for primary education in an open education system within accredited teacher training colleges;
  • Members of communities to become school mediators within Teacher Training Houses or other educational institutions
  • Development of a school based curriculum for second chance vocational education;
  • Development of teaching materials for teaching pupils and students in pre-school, primary, after school and second chance education;
  • Development of training programmes for disadvantaged communities to facilitate participation in the development of educational provision;
  • Liaison with the National Centre for Vocational Education and Training on the development of second chance education facilities;
  • Community capacity building and consultation training to facilitate direct involvement of local community and local authorities in educational project implementation;
  • Development of open distance learning projects;
  • Procurement of Euros 1.2M educational equipment.
The programme ran in 10 counties selected through competition and was linked to a grant scheme run under a separate project, designed to enhance and upgrade the existing educational facilities.
