| WYG International first undertook projects in Ukraine in 1993. Since then we have had a continuous presence implementing principally donor projects, but also projects for private clients. Most of our larger assignments have been capacity building for national and regional governments. We are currently implementing a very large (Euros 10 million) assignment for DFID in Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts called Action Donbass which has a five year duration and supports administrative and social reform in these two Regions through a comprehensive and integrated range of initiatives all focussed on improving the lives of the regions’ population.
As well as our extensive donor funded activities in Eastern Ukraine we have completed projects for central government in Kiev and for other clients in Lvov Region. With the EU now bordering Western Ukraine our track record qualifies us and positions us to respond to the expanding EU cross border and “Neighbour” Programmes.
In the early and mid 90s we undertook many assignments in Ukraine for the EU, DFID and World Bank on the first stages of the restructuring of one of the countries largest and most challenging sectors – the coal industry. This sector remains an economic burden on the state and there are indications that the new Government is willing to face the technical and social challenges of further rationalisation. We can bring unrivalled knowledge of these issues from our experience in Europe and from the notably successful coal sector restructuring in which we have participated in Russia for more than a decade.
